How to start your work day off well even when you’re already stressed

August 2, 2016Tim SittHealth, Self-awareness, self-care, stress
Yesterday, I had the hardest time beginning my workday. I seemed to be bursting with energy, but my mind was scattered in a thousand different directions. The sense of overwhelm and confusion was whirling.  I took this as a cue that I needed to check in with my body particularly the tensions and stuck points that I was feeling about my work.

I took a couple of minutes to just listen in stillness not trying to grasp impulsively at the first task simply for the sensation of productivity. I allowed myself to connect to my breath and listened.  There was no incredible insight that came from this but simply a funneling of all the nervous scattered energy as I landed in my seat and began working.

I had my breath and I had my body.

With that, I was able to begin.

Each day brings new challenges and we need the ability to be flexible with whatever comes up. Some days what challenges us is our own emotional/mental states.  Having a way to clear a space and get centered is so important particularly when beginning since various tasks and people are competing for our attention.  If we can not first get control of our attention then we will surely get caught up in the tornado of To Dos and end up feeling lost and ineffectual.
Below is a short Body Awareness exercise that focuses on Tensions that will help you get centered.

Share your experience of this in the comments below.

Wishing you good mental and physical health!

Tim Sitt
Tim is the creator of the MOVE program. Initially, he developed MOVE in his efforts to heal his chronic back pain, and found after a month his back pain was gone never to return. He started to incorporate bits of exercise throughout his day and lost 20 lbs- his “office” fat- while he was at it. Not only did he find that MOVE improved his physical well- being, he also found significant improvements in his mood, energy, and focus. He is embarking on an adventurous journey to change the prominent sedentary culture to help businesses have happier and healthier employees. Tim’s background as a Personal Trainer and Child and Family Therapist makes him well suited for creating the MOVE program that integrates physical and mental health. He is the husband of the Director of Operations.
